Protection Plan Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I purchase a TriStar Protection Plan contract?
TriStar is there for you when you need repairs. We have what you need to get back on the road quickly: roadside assistance, towing, a rental car, direct payment to the repair facility of your choice, and trip interruption! In addition to all of these great protections, a TriStar vehicle service contract increases your car’s trade-in value.
How does a TriStar vehicle service contract work?
Vehicle service contracts are often referred to as "extended warranties," "car repair insurance," or "breakdown insurance" by customers. In actuality, it’s a contract between you and TriStar, under which TriStar agrees to pay your repair facility for covered repairs. You buy and own your TriStar vehicle service contract for a single fee and then TriStar pays for all covered repairs for the life of the contract.
When should I purchase TriStar coverage?
TriStar coverage is the least expensive to purchase early in the life of your vehicle, even for the same length of coverage. It's actually less expensive to buy coverage up to 100,000 miles when a car is new or nearly-new than it is to add 40,000 additional miles to a car that already has 60,000 miles on the odometer. And you're not paying for double coverage if TriStar’s coverage is in place during the manufacturer's warranty. TriStar takes that coverage into account when rates are set. Plus, it supplements your manufacturer's initial warranty* with benefits like trip interruption and more.
How much do TriStar contracts cost?
Like insurance, the cost of a TriStar contract is directly related to the type of car you own, how long it has been in service, and what deductible and plan you select. TriStar service plans may be included in your vehicle purchase financing.
Is there a money-back guarantee?
Of course there is. Each TriStar plan has a 30-day full money-back guarantee (provided there are no claims). After 30 days, upon your written request, TriStar will refund the pro-rated unused portion of your service plan. Contact your selling agent for details. *See contract for specific state rules and regulations.
What parts and service does a TriStar service contract cover?
Several plans are available, from comprehensive coverage that covers everything but a small list of "exclusions", to basic powertrain protection.
Is my car, truck, or SUV eligible for coverage?
Coverage is available on current model year vehicles through nine previous model years, with up to 125,000 miles at the time of vehicle purchase.
Do I have to wait for reimbursement on my repair claim?
No. TriStar pays the repair facility directly.
How are repair claims processed?
Bring your car and your TriStar vehicle service contract to a licensed repair facility. The mechanic will call TriStar for authorization before work is performed, and TriStar will pay the repair facility directly on your behalf by credit card.
Where can I get my car repaired?
TriStar vehicle service contracts are welcomed at virtually every repair facility in the U.S. and Canada, as well as at all TriStar dealerships with a service facility. The dealership that sold the vehicle is often the best option for your repairs. Look for ASE certified mechanics in your area.
What other products does TriStar sell?
TriStar sells Freedom Guard™, TriStar GAP coverage, and TriStar Roadside Assistance.
I’d like to modify my vehicle. Will the TriStar Protection Plan cover these modifications?
Probably not. A good rule of thumb when considering modifications of any type is that if it voids the manufacturer’s warranty, it will void your service contract. Keep this in mind when buying your vehicle as well. If you are buying a modified vehicle, it most likely cannot be covered by a service contract.*Manufacturer's warranty coverage varies by manufacturer. Please see manufacturer for details
